This is a paper nautilus, which strictly speaking isn't really a shell at all, it is more of an egg basket!!! 

The argonaut, or paper nautilus, is actually an octopus. Females make a parchment-like shell to carry incubating eggs and control where they swim in the water column.

Simply amazing these are so delicate. This one has a small hairline crack at the edge but is in otherwise perfect condition.
